Now is the time to seek out those late booking flight bargains to London and there are two very special reasons to go in August and September - it's the only time you can get to go inside two of London's most famous and historic buildings - Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament). The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace will be open daily from 31 July to 29 September. This is the ONLY time the public can see the inside of Buckingham Palace - The Queen's official residence in London. The State Rooms form the heart of the working palace and are lavishly furnished with some of the finest treasures from the Royal Collection. The palace's lovely gardens are also open and offer superb views of the palace and the 19th-century lake. If you're in London at this time a chance to see these magnificent rooms and gardens is not to be missed. More details and tickets via www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page570.asp The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) will open this summer from 28 July - 27 September, with tours operating every few minutes. While British citizens can arrange to go any time, the Houses of Parliament are ONLY open to foreign visitors between these dates. More details and tickets via: www.parliament.uk/visiting/summer_opening.cfm An added bonus of visiting in August/September is that the notoriously fickle British weather offers the best chance of clear skies and warm sun, and there are fewer people as the tourist peak is over and many of the locals are away for their annual summer break.
14 July - Bastille Day is France's most important national holiday. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a notorious high security prison, and marks the beginning of the French Revolution. Celebrations and huge firework displays take place all over France but none greater than in Paris. On the eve of what the French call "14 Juillet" you can dance the night away on the Place de la Bastille or in one of the numerous balls held all over Paris. Many of these balls are held in local fire stations where local bands perform! If you fancy something a little quieter, you can join the world's largest picnic that takes place in more than 20 of France's departments on Bastille Day. On the day itself the crowds line the Champs Elysées where a large military parade makes its way from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde lead by the president. Festivities continue all day and in the evening the city is illuminated by fireworks. The largest of these displays can be seen at the Eiffel Tower where crowds gather on the Champs de Mars. Most clubs and bars organise their own celebrations so if you want to end the night dancing or listening to music you can take you pick! Be there if you can. New addition to our Paris help-line service. We now have the facility that if you are out and about and having difficulty communicating in French, you can phone this line and use it as an instant translation service. Coming soon on our Paris web site - a multi-page section for lovers: "Romantic Paris".
